Personal Research Journey

The topic for simulation that I have chosen is mandated preschool programs. I chose this topic because I see so many young children miss out on the opportunity to experience attending an early childhood education program because their parents can't afford to pay the tuition/childcare fees.  There are, however, some families who simply choose not to allow their child to attend due to a lack of understanding or knowledge about the importance of preschool as well as some parents who just want to keep their child at home; especially if they are unemployed by choice. I believe that law should mandate preschool programs to make early childhood education available to all families regardless of socio-economic status and parents should be mandated to allow their child to attend unless the child is being home schooled. Constructing the research chart has given me more insight on what information goes under which subtopic, how to decipher through the information I read, and what information isn't relevant.  If any of my colleagues have advice, insight, or resources to share that would be beneficial to me in completing the research process in this course, it would be greatly appreciated as I will do the same.

  1. Such an important topic, the cost of living in my state makes it nearly impossible for middle income families to afford preschool, grandparent care is the close second. Junior Kindergarten is going away in 2014 due to funding, Head Start is having their funding cut, there is a bug campaign underway to lobby for Universal preschool and increased funding for preschool. Something else that comes to mind ties in to my topic of determining teacher quality to effect child outcomes is that if policy supports mandated preschool programs how do they ensure quality. How do they ensure funding is given to those programs that are not just mediocre, there needs to be a measure for that. Food for thought. Great topic!

  2. Towanda I like the topic you have chosen mandated preschool programs are very important. All young children should have a good early head start in their educational experience, a good educational setting help children with all kinds of skills such as social skills. And I agree with you some parents are not knowledgeable on how important a good early education is.

  4. Good topic Towanda, it’s sad that most parents are not prepared or trained before assuming the job of parenthood. This is one of the reasons we have wide achievement gap. Getting government to mandate preschool program will be beneficial to all including the government. Although it is a tall order and requires control, it is very essential. This issue of availability and accessibility of early childhood programs is indeed everywhere. I will like to be part of your study; I may want to carry out same study in future but in the context of my country. Cheers

  5. Great topic. Educating young children is very important. There are so many children missing out on the opportunity to get a good education, because parents can’t afford the cost of early childhood education. Towanda I wish the best in your research.
